Daschle Utters Something
by: Daniel Riehs
WASHINGTONSenate Majority Leader Tom Daschle reportedly referenced Star Trek-character Montgomery Scott during President Bush's State of the Union Address.
The alleged allusion occurred after the President brought up his proposal for permanent tax cuts and the continued use of tax-relief checks.
"I think he was trying to talk in a British accent," claimed Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) "He said something to the effect of 'I just can't do it. I need more power.' I don't know. I was never really into science fiction myself."
Political analysts theorize that Daschle was trying to imitate Montgomery Scott, a character played by James Doohan on the original Star Trek series. Scott, being the chief engineer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, was often pressured by Captain Kirk to improvise engineering miracles that seemed to require "more power" than he had the means to provide.
Vermont Peters, president of the "American Trekie Society," said during an exclusive interview, "[Senator Daschle's] portrayal of 'Scotty' was an unfair depiction of a character who was actually very well developed and capable of displaying a full range of traits and emotions. It's sad that his legacy will be besmirched by his occasional bickering about a lack of resources."
At a recent press conference, Senator Daschle claimed that he had actually expressed his disgust with the President's policies by making a clever joke about the Regan administration. When asked to elaborate, however, Daschle abruptly switched the topic of conversation to school vouchers.
A Senate sub-committee, outside the jurisdiction of Daschle, has been organized to further investigate this issue.
