FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Kevin Myers, owner of The Golf Hut, recently switched back to UPS as his preferred method of shipping online orders. Myers, who supplements the earnings from his store by selling golf equipment on eBay, had been using FedEx since 2001.

"You see," said Myers at a recent press conference, "Back in 1999, I started sending out all of my packages with UPS, but I sensed there were some problems with the company back then, so it was only a couple of years before I switched back."

Myers then continued, "But now I think FedEx is changing. I've been getting a lot of complaints from people who want more reliable ways to track their shipments. It's always 'Where's my package,' or 'When are you going to send my golf clubs.' I'm really hoping that UPS will be able to clear up most of those issues. I've heard there're a lot better than they used to be."

Store employee Chuck Jones had a different recollection of Myers' past shipping habits.

"I think he's been back and forth at least a half-a-dozen times in the last five years. Every time he switches shippers, it's like he's totally forgotten why he switched away from them in the first place."

Clark Anderson, an observer of trends in package distribution, told reporters that such erratic changes often happen to store owners who really on such services to ship their products.

"The truth is," said Anderson. "UPS and FedEx are about equally unreliable. It is only by switching back and forth that patrons can stay blind to that awful truth."

When asked if he would ever consider using the US Postal Service, Myers said, "Good God, No. At least with these guys my packages have a chance of making it to their destinations."
