I Get So Worried About This Prisoner Abuse Stuff. What If Someone Were To Get Hurt?
Lately I've been hearing so much about the abuses that have been inflicted on prisoners of the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad. Now, I understand that the U.S. military must occasionally use questionable interrogation techniques to learn all they can from these Iraqi soldiers, but is it worth taking the risk that someone could get seriously hurt?
If a prisoner were to be injured, it could seriously damage the world's opinion of Operation Iraqi Freedom. For the moment, we seem to have most people on our side, but if the press started leaking stories of Iraqis getting all bruised and scratched up, we could lose much of that support.
And what if there is retaliation? Americans have never been ones to accept casualties as necessary consequences of military operations. Can you imagine the response if Iraqis started fighting back? It would only take one soldier with a bloody nose or a bruised knee to change people's opinion of the operation.
All of this, of course, is why this prisoner abuse must stop immediately. We're doing a great job in Iraqbuilding schools and hospitals, teaching the Iraqi people that there is hope for the futurelet's not throw it all away by letting someone get hurt.
. . . Which is what is going to happen if we can't stop the abuse.
